Storage Totes, Carts, Racks, Bins, Crates, and More for Music Classrooms

What’s the secret to a music classroom that’s well-organized with each instrument protected and in its place? The right storage solutions, of course! One of the best times to update classroom storage and organization is when you’re cleaning, sorting, and organizing before summer.

  1. First, determine your needs. Think about your working style, room size, and your students’ ages and abilities. Would it help to have at-a-glance visual aids for pre-readers? Will your storage footprint fit your storage accessories?

  2. Sort things out. Take all your classroom music instruments, movement accessories, teaching aids, and curriculum materials out and place into one of these categories:
  • Keep and Organize: Set aside items that you still actively use. You’ll be organizing these items so they are easy to access and easy to put away for you and your students.
  • Repair and Replace: These are items you would use if they were in better condition. Do your scarves and parachutes need to be cleaned? Missing a few mallets? Have a few cracked shaker eggs? Are your curricular materials current?
  • Donate or Swap: Place items you haven’t used in two years into a HOLD box. If you still haven’t used an item after one more year, donate it to another classroom or swap for things you can use.
  • Trash or Recycle: items you do not use and cannot be repaired.

NOTE: For items that were purchased with district or grant funds, first get permission from your supervisor or principal before donating, swapping, trashing, or recycling.

  1. Find storage and organization solutions. Once you know how much you need to store and organize, you can select the best storage accessories. The most durable and convenient options are those made for music classrooms. Here are some popular, tried-and-true solutions that can turn your musical mess into a super-organized, self-maintaining system.

Teacher Carts: Whether you travel from classroom to classroom, teach virtually, or just need to keep everything within reach, a teacher cart is a must. This easy-moving three-tiered cart features heavy-duty construction, steering handles on each end, 4-inch rubber casters, and lipped shelves. Customize it with on-board divider bins (two fit on each shelf), and you’ve got a classroom on wheels.

Instrument Racks, Bags, and Dust Covers: Keep your large classroom instruments safe and protected from unnecessary wear and tear with protective racks, bags, and covers.  Designed to accommodate the unique dimensions and needs of music instruments, protective racks feature instrument-friendly features like soft rungs, heavy-duty supports, and smooth-rolling swivel casters. Instrument bags for ukuleles, Boomwhackers, and tube drums provide on-the-move protection, along with handles for easy toting. Instrument dust covers will keep your glockenspiels, xylophones, and metallophones looking like new while banishing dust bunnies, dings, and dents.

Rolling Totes, Baskets, and Crates: Store instruments used by your youngest students in baskets or crates placed below their line of sight. Place instrument sets (like rhythm sticks and shakers) together in open boxes and baskets for fast access and clean-up. It’s also a good idea to keep instruments with their corresponding mallets, sticks, bows, etc.  And for heavy items and things you use occasionally, wheeled totes will tuck away neatly in your storage area. If your students are pre-readers, labels with pictures or color coding help as well.

Humidity Controllers: This one is often overlooked. Depending on the time of year, the humidity in your classroom and storage area can swing wildly. These fluctuations can warp and crack wood instruments and affect sound quality. Protect your instruments with in-case humidity controllers or whole-room humidification.
